I enjoy problem solving and applied chemistry, and I try to create products and concepts that better humanity and help our environment. My research interests are in pheromone chemistry, vacuum distillation, permanent magnetism, and electrochemical reactions. I also travel the world with my loving wife, and enjoy meeting people and learning about their cultures. Our time in the United States is split between New England and the Mid-Atlantic states.
INVENTIONS:
My research partner, Dr. Patrick Rice and I own the company SharkDefense , featured in the media and recipient of numerous grants and awards. I am the inventor of a number of novel selective shark repellent technologies, which I dedicated more than a decade of my life to studying as well as my PhD research under Dr. James E. Hanson. These repellent technologies include semiochemicals, permanent magnetic fields, and electropositive metals. All of these repellents save the lives of thousands of sharks annually by reducing bycatch, and also protect humans by reducing interactions with sharks. Some of these technologies are enjoying worldwide commercial success via our licensees: SharkBanz, SharkTec, SharkOff and others. We invented the SmartHook, the time-release PolyShark polymer, and water-activated chemical shark repellent canisters.
I also spent time researching the invasive sea lamprey in the Great Lakes with Dr. Michael Wagner, and explored novel chemical repellent signals to interrupt their breeding and help reduce their numbers without harming the delicate freshwater ecosystems.

DISTILLING:
I am a licensed farm distiller in upstate New York, and operate a novel all-glass fractional vacuum distillation plant. I created the country’s first pawpaw farm distillery, growing this amazing fruit in Sprout Brook, NY on a 4-acre farm. The distillery is also one of the first ever to use spinning-band vacuum distillation, exceeding the “textbook” azeotrope of ethanol-water.
